Meet the Doula

Jessica Hoagland

I am a registered nurse in San Diego with over 12 years of experience in labor and delivery and postpartum. I was born and raised in East County and currently live in Crest with my husband, 3 children, 2 dogs, 2 rabbits and 12 chickens. I have had two hospital births and one home birth and have loved every one of them. My third pregnancy ignited a spiritual awakening that inspired me to move my practice away from the bedside and really begin supporting women without the restrictions and distractions of working for a hospital. I continue to learn new ways to support my clients by incorporating Reiki and meditation into my practice and calling on my intuition to guide me. My mission is to help women trust their own intuition and have an empowered birth experience, whether that is at home, in a birth center, or in a hospital. I strive to facilitate connections between women in our community and build up villages of support. No woman should have to navigate motherhood alone!

Testimonials

"Jessica is just fantastic. I had my first child recently and Jessica was our doula. Working with her was the best decision I made to prepare myself and my family for our new baby. My husband and I took her class prior to baby, and she taught us how to navigate the scary situations that we ran into at the hospital. She taught us what questions to ask, how to ask them and how to make informed decisions. I cannot stress enough how important this was for us. My husband even felt equip to step up and speak out when we felt pressured by the doctors. Jess empowered us with knowledge that was irreplaceable. It should also be noted that she is incredibly kind and has the most amazing calmness to her. I would recommend taking her class and having her as a doula to any of my friends and family." -A.S.

"I interviewed a few doulas in my early pregnancy and Jessica was an instant connection for both me and my husband. The fact that she’s an experienced labor and delivery nurse and also a very intuitive doula was the perfect combo for us as first time parents. I wouldn’t feel that confident during my pregnancy and labor if it wasn’t for her constant support. Her calming voice and sensibility are unique. I love how I didn’t have to say much, Jessica would sense everything and make sure I had the best environment and experience during my labor in the hospital, especially when things didn’t go exactly how I was envisioning (she made sure I was prepared for it in advance by setting up low expectations). Her care and support during my postpartum was extremely important as well. If I have another child I will consider a home birth and 100% will hire Jessica again!" -J.O.

"Hiring Jessica was hands down one of the best decisions I could have ever made. From the beginning, Jessica was very interested in getting to know me, learning how she can best help me and understand what my specific needs were. She was also readily available to answer questions and respond to updates during my pregnancy. At the hospital, her years of experience working in labor and delivery as a nurse were clearly noticeable as she helped me understand a lot of the medical terms discussed by the hospital staff, which in turn empowered me to make the best decisions for how I wanted to give birth. She also knew how to keep me replenished through the labor and knew how to motivate me when I felt exhausted. However, the most important part of it all was that she made me feel safe because she is someone who really cares. I will definitely hire her for the birth of my next baby and will be recommending her to all of my friends. She is the best! <3" -D.U.

"Jessica is an incredible doula! She was essential in helping me to deliver my daughter vaginally, without pain medication and with minimal interventions. I was able to do this despite receiving pressure from hospital staff to consider an epidural and vacuum extraction of my baby after pushing was taking "too long." I did not want these interventions and Jessica supported my wishes giving me the guidance I needed to successfully and safely give birth to my daughter. Whatever your birth plan may include, Jessica would be an excellent addition to your support team. Her wisdom and calming energy coupled with her many years of medical experience in labor and delivery make her the perfect support person for any birth/family. I cannot recommend her enough. "   -E.B.

"Jessica was with me through the birth of my son. The labor experience was a great one, and my son was over 10 pounds! I honestly don’t think I could have done it without her. With Jessica I had an advocate and protector in my birthing plan. During labor she knew exactly what to do and say at the right time. She knew when to make a joke so I would laugh, when to get serious, and when to just hold my hand. She was so comforting; it was like having a professionally trained good friend in the room with me. She has extensive knowledge in labor and delivery which she was able to explain to me in a way that I understood which really helped put my fears at ease. Jessica was very intuitive and respectful of my husband who was excited to be part of the birth. Having Jessica there let him be involved but also took a lot of pressure off him. She helped make his level of involvement exactly what we both wanted. If you are considering using a Doula then trust me choose Jessica Hoagland. I promise you will thank me." -L.O.

"When you are having your first child, there is nothing like having someone with you who you trust, who is loving, compassionate, wise and grounding. Jessica was that for both my first birth and my second. Looking back I can say that it was her presence that brought me so much peace while I was in labor. She not only supported me as a nurse but was there for me emotionally and mentally while I experienced the journey of labor. She was my rock. When she is with you, it feels like you are supported by a wise, experienced and gentle woman. It's exactly the kind of support I think each one of us needs when we are in labor. Even after the births of my children, she continued to support me with breastfeeding and all the little questions that naturally come after giving birth. Jessica was the first person I consulted when I was pregnant and the first person I continued to call when I had postpartum questions. She has blessed so many people with her gifts and I am so thankful for her." -K.N.

"Jessica was my L&D nurse for my second birth, which took a quick turn to an emergent c-section when my daughters condition began deteriorating. She was so thorough and attentive while monitoring us. Jessica was the calm in the chaos. She was by my side the entire delivery, talking me through every step during my surgery and then through my recovery. She made me feel safe. I know a million times over that Jessica was meant to be with our family that night. I am forever grateful for her."  - J.N.

"My husband and I lost our son due to a non-viable pregnancy at 17 weeks, and we are so thankful to have had Jessica by our side during our induction. She listened to our needs and concerns and was there for us every step of the way, providing emotional support, practical assistance, and thoughtful guidance. Her compassion, empathy, and knowledge were invaluable as we navigated the complex emotions that come with losing a child. We highly recommend Jessica to anyone looking for a doula who will listen to your needs, provide personalized support, and give you space to love and grieve your child in your own way. Having her by my side during one of the toughest times in my life undoubtedly made a significant difference in my healing process. I no longer look back on that day with sadness and loss, but instead I am left with the precious memory of holding my little boy in my arms, surrounded by so much love and warmth. Thank you so much, Jessica, not only for being such an incredible source of support during such a difficult time, but also for helping us honor our son's life in a way that we will never forget." - S.L.
